Who we are

Portal Players Dramatic Society

The Alberni Valley’s community theatre company, and the volunteer owner and operator of The Capitol Theatre.

A volunteer company with its own theatre

Portal Players Dramatic Society is a volunteer, membership-driven theatre company in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. Since 1978 we have been putting Alberni Valley talent on stage, and since 1989 we have owned and run The Capitol Theatre.

Every actor, director, designer, technician and usher is a volunteer. A board of directors and executive committee, elected by our members, oversees the society and the theatre.

What we do

  • Produce an annual season of three or four plays and musicals
  • Run improv nights, workshops, rehearsals and auditions
  • Host membership and board meetings
  • Open the theatre to touring acts, concerts and community events

Our vision

To build community appreciation for the performing arts, and to be known for progressive, innovative and dynamic entertainment and educational programs.

Our mission

Portal Players produces plays, runs a civic theatre, and offers educational programs, mentorship and outreach for youth and adults. We work with arts and business partners, advocate for diverse cultural experiences in the Alberni Valley, and operate The Capitol Theatre.

Ultimately, Portal Players believes in the power of art to bring all people together.

Our partners

Portal Players is a member of the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Alberni Valley Community Arts Council and Theatre BC. The Capitol Theatre benefits from the Alberni Valley Community Foundation’s Community Fund Grants, as well as Community Gaming Grants from the Province of BC.
