“I Hate Hamlet!” a comedy by Paul Rudnick, opens April 20, 2023

Portal Players Dramatic Society’s next production is shaping up well – TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE NOW via online purchase (click this link or the image below).

Andrew Rally seems to have it all: celebrity and acclaim from his starring role in a hit television series; a rich, beautiful girlfriend; a glamorous, devoted agent; the perfect New York apartment; and the chance to play Hamlet in Central Park. There are, however, a couple of glitches in paradise. Andrew’s series has been canceled; his girlfriend is clinging to her virginity with unyielding conviction; and he has no desire to play Hamlet. When Andrew’s agent visits him, she reminisces about her brief romance with John Barrymore many years ago, in Andrew’s apartment. This prompts a seance to summon his ghost. From the moment Barrymore returns, dressed in high Shakespearean garb, Andrew’s life is no longer his own. Barrymore, fortified by champagne and ego, presses Andrew to accept the part and fulfill his actor’s destiny. The action becomes more hilarious with the entrance of Andrew’s deal-making friend from LA, spouting the laid-back hype of the Coast and offering Andrew a fabulous new TV deal worth millions of dollars. The laughs are nonstop as Andrew wrestles with his conscience, Barrymore, his sword, and the fact that he fails as Hamlet in Central Park.

“I Hate Hamlet”, directed by L’Rae Whipple and produced by Nicole Foster, opens on April 20, 2023 at The Capitol Theatre and plays on select dates through May 6. It is also Portal Players’ entry in the Theatre BC North Island Zone Drama Festival being held the third week of May in Campbell River.

This play includes scintillating sword fighting and mature content – more details coming soon . . .

Comedy at The Capitol, Feb 16 – 25, 2023!

“I Take This Man”

by Jack Sharkey, directed by Diena Tyne

On stage at The Capitol Theatre in Port Alberni on select dates, February 16 – 25, 2023.

When lovely young Gideon Hollis a.k.a. Giddy spots an unconscious man in a tank top and shorts lying in Copley Square just after all other Boston Marathon racers have crossed the finish line, she reasons that since nice guys finish last, this must be Mr. Right! She has a helpful policeman tote him to her nearby apartment, shocking her roommate, whose fiance is due for a dinner date. When the comatose dreamboat revives and cannot remember who he is, Giddy tells him they are married. She regrets her subterfuge when he tries to be a loving husband. Complications escalate at a furious pace in this outrageous concoction of wild, warm, and lightning-paced hilarity that is perfect for the entire family.

Tickets are available in advance from the Alberni District Co-op’s administration office, 4885 Beaver Creek Road, Port Alberni (cash sales only). Tickets are also available at the door on show nights at The Capitol Theatre, 4904 Argyle Street. The play runs for two weekends between February 16 and 25, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the curtain opens at 7:30 pm. For more information, text or call 250-913-0454.

August Update 2021

Hello everyone! August is here and we are gearing up for an exciting fall! We have begun working on remounting “The Complete Works of Williams Shakespeare (Abridged)” and the Society is looking for volunteers to join the board, various committees, and upcoming events. Grab your calendars so you can save these dates!

Before we get into all the exciting fall events, we have an update on our CEBA application. For members who couldn’t attend the Extraordinary General Meeting back in June, Portal Players applied for a loan through the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA). The CEBA program provides interest-free loans of up to $60,000 to small businesses and not-for-profits and a portion of it would’ve been forgivable. Unfortunately, we were not successful in our application and will need to look at other opportunities for fundraising.

As September quickly approaches, we are looking to fill four seats on the Board. We will be holding a Nominations meeting on August 26, 2021, at the theatre at 7 pm. We are looking for members to fill the roles of Director-at-Large and Treasurer. If you or someone you know is interested, please encourage them to join us at this meeting or they can contact the committee chair at hinatinyis@gmail.com.

The Fundraising Committee has a few events this fall to coordinate and is looking for volunteers. The committee will be meeting on September 9, 2021, at the theatre at 7pm. Portal Players will be participating in a Revival of the Arts event late September or early October, and we are also collaborating with Co-op for the Fuel Good Day in September.

Fuel Good Day is an annual event where Alberni Co-op and the Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) donates .10 cents per litre sold at all three Port Alberni locations. The more fuel sold, the more money donated. We are looking for individuals who would be interested in dressing up in costume to help create a presence and draw attention. We are also looking for people to help coordinate all our lovely volunteers!

As for the Revival of the Arts event, we look forward to inviting you back into our theatre. We have not fully formed this event and look forward to working with our volunteers to shape it into an exciting fundraiser that compliments our upcoming season.

A big shout out to the cast and crew of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) for hitting the ground running on their upcoming production. Rehearsals have begun and the cast and crew are eager to share their love of laughter with you all. Opening weekend will be October 8, and we look forward to seeing you all there! Stay safe and we can’t wait to see you all again!

One last reminder! Our Annual General Meeting is also next month and we would like to invite you to join us in-person. We will post an official Notice of Meeting with the agenda shortly but please mark your calendars for Thursday, September 23, at 7pm.
