This free concert at the Capitol Theatre in the heart of Port Alberni will blend music from the land and from the heart. Tsimka Martin will share songs in her heritage language, Tia-o-qui-aht ƛaʔuukwiʔatḥ.ḥ., while Michael Red creates soundscapes with recordings by Tsimka from her ƛaʔuukwiʔatḥ home territory, and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh territory. Get ready to enjoy an evening filled with live music and insightful conversations by these talented artists!

Tsimka Martin, rooted In Nuučaan̓uł territories, morphs millennia-old oral and drumming traditions into contemporary sonic vibrations. Inspired by the dualities of the ancient and the modern, Indigenous and settler identities, ƛaʔuukwiʔatḥ and English languages, Tsimka playfully reinterprets spiritual wisdom, natural elements, and cultural stories to remind listeners of the rhythms alive in us all – breath, heart, and joy.

Michael Red is a Vancouver-based music producer, composer, curator, performer and co-founder & lead for Low Indigo, ambient music artist under the name Souns, former collaborator and touring artist with throat singer Tanya Tagaq, with projects and collaborations with a long list of other notable artists. Michael is recognized as playing a critical role in shaping foundational sound system and underground electronic music culture in Western Canada, as both an event creator and DJ.

“The Pillowman” sweeps at Theatre BC’s 2024 Mainstage Festival

Portal Players Dramatic Society’s Cast & Crew of “The Pillowman”

 

In their first-ever visit to Theatre BC’s Mainstage Festival, Portal Players Dramatic Society won the coveted title of “Best Production,” along with many other awards for their performance of “The Pillowman” by Martin McDonagh. In total, Portal Players returned home from Mainstage with seven different awards as presented by adjudicator Joan McLean at the Awards Ceremony, hosted by and at the Chilliwack Players Guild in Chilliwack on July 7, 2024. “We had the best night of the show ever on our Mainstage night, ” said director Nicole Foster. “We felt that we did well, but there were some other really strong contenders.
